The violations bureau is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (except holidays). From July 6, 2020 through September 4, 2020 the violations bureau will be closed on Fridays.

The municipal court / violations bureau reopens on Wednesdays for the purpose of conducting weekly court sessions.

Effective Wednesday, July 8, 2020, the Fair Lawn Municipal Court will begin holding in-person court sessions. The session times will be staggered. Please read your notice to appear carefully to see if you are required to appear for the 5:00 pm session or the 6:00 pm session.

Procedures and policies you should be aware of for your scheduled court date:

  • You will be required to wear a mask to enter the municipal building and the entire time you are in the building.
  • Only the names listed on the court calendar will be permitted to enter the building for the court session. No relatives or friends are permitted to enter the facility. This includes children. If you are represented by an attorney, their name will appear on the court calendar and they will be allowed entry.
  • Please let security know upon arrival if you are represented by an attorney. You will not be allowed to enter until your attorney arrives to enter together.
  • You are prohibited from bringing any personal items, such as, handbags, backpacks or briefcases into the building. It is recommended that you leave said items home or locked safely away. You will be permitted to enter with only your car keys, cell phone (which must be silenced) and any paperwork or documents related to your case.
  • Once you have been granted access to the municipal building, you are to proceed to the second floor and court security will direct you where you can meet with the municipal prosecutor.  If you anticipate a fine being imposed, please remember to bring with you, cash, credit card and or personal check.
  • Social distancing will be monitored and enforced at all times and must be adhered to in the hallways and within the courtroom. Please practice 6 feet of social distancing for your safety and the safety of others.


The Fair Lawn Municipal Court is responsible for the prosecution, trial and ultimate disposition of offenses committed within the territorial limits and boundaries of the Borough. These offenses include, but are not limited to, all motor vehicle and traffic laws; all violations of the New Jersey Criminal Justice Code classified as disorderly persons and petty disorderly persons offenses; all violations of Borough Ordinances and Codes. The responsibility also includes the prosecution of DWI (driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drug) offenses, and issuance of temporary restraining orders involving incidents of domestic violence.

The Court handles the processing of initial complaints, summonses, arrest warrants, search warrants, probable cause hearings, suppression of evidence motions, subpoenas, failure to appear notices, motor vehicle suspension notices, and commitments to the jail and/or county mental health facilities, discharges, bail determinations, and arraignments.

In addition, its duties also include the appointment of public defenders for indigent defendants, and determinations regarding jail or alternative sentencing options like drug and alcohol intervention programs, mental health intervention programs, violence counseling and complimentary dispute resolution (mediation).

The Violations Bureau, which is a branch of the Court, handles the collections of fines for summonses issued in Fair Lawn. The Court is presided over by a Municipal Court Judge who is appointed to a three (3) year term by the Borough Council. The current Municipal Court Judge is Jason T. Shafron. The Municipal Courts day to day operations are managed by Clare M. Cabibbo, Certified Municipal Court Administrator.

All Municipal Court Sessions are open to the Public. The Municipal Court holds court sessions on Wednesdays.
