FAIR LAWN ADDS EMERGENCY TELEPHONE ALERTING SYSTEM
Residents
with non-published numbers should contact OEM
The Borough of Fair Lawn
will be adding an additional means of community alerting when it activates the
Emergency Telephone Alerting System on/or about May 1, 2002.
The
system, which was funded through corporate donations, will allow the Office of
Emergency Management (OEM) to provide very specific emergency information via
the telephone to local residents at a rate of 15,000 notifications per hour. The
borough has entered into a contract with Community Alert Network (CAN) an
Albany, New York firm to provide the service.
Telephone alerting uses the same technology as telephone marketing.
The system will have fifteen pre-recorded messages that will begin
dialing when a proper access code is provided to the CAN operator.
Additionally,
the CAN system utilizes a mapping software program that will allow for very
specific information being provided in a very specific area.
As an example, if flooding is expected along the Passaic River, a drag of
the computer mouse along the river will notify residents in the Passaic River
flood zone only.
Residents
with non-published telephone numbers should contact the office of Emergency
Management to have their name, address and telephone number added to the contact
database. OEM can be contacted by
calling 201-794-5390 or on-line at www.fairlawn.org.
This system was made possible through a donation by: The Burton Agency, Emergency Management Advisors, Fisher Scientific, Merck Medco, Nabisco, Sandvik Coromat, and SK Energy.
