Fair Lawn's largest department is Public Works which is divided into nine divisions: Administrative, Buildings and Grounds, Road Services, Water, Shade Tree, Electrical Services, Sewer, Vehicle Maintenance and Recycling. Administrative and Buildings and Grounds operate out of the Municipal Building; Roads, Sewer, Recycling, Shade Tree and Vehicle Maintenance are located at the DPW complex on Saddle River Road. Water and Electrical share a compound on Cadmus Place. 

Important duties include maintenance of public buildings, maintaining 81 miles of roads from sweeping and plowing to leaf collection, maintaining sewer pump stations and mains, providing drinking water from 15 wells and connections to the Hackensack Water and Passaic Valley Systems, removing and planting shade trees, and weekly collection of recyclables.
