| Ground breaking ceremonies for the World Trade Center Memorial Garden took place on Sunday, September 11, 2005. The Mayor and Council, Police Chaplain, Borough Manager, and the Garden Committee Chairperson all spoke at the site that will be dedicated to the three Fair Lawn residents who died on that day - Susan Huie, Richard Rosenthal, and Jennifer Lynn Kane. An additional plaque in remembrance of Fair Lawn resident Frank Connor, who died in a terrorist bombing at Fraunces Tavern in New York City in 1975 will be included in the memorial. Representatives of the Garden Committee were present at the ceremonies. On Sunday, October 9th, 2005, the River Road Improvement Corporation will be holding their annual River Road Street Fair. As in past years, the Garden Committee will be there with seasonal decorations, fall bulbs, and other items for sale. Please stop by at our table and say hello, ask your gardening questions, and pick up a pumpkin or two or three.... We are currently considering a Garden Tour of Fair Lawn sometime in the future as a fundraiser. If you would like to participate or nominate a neighbor's garden to be part of a tour, please contact us via the email link below. |
The Fair Lawn Boro Garden Committee (FLBGC) is a volunteer committee that plants and maintains gardens in public spaces around the Boro. We are appointed by the Council and meet formally four times a year. We garden April through November, weather permitting.
To date, we have planted spaces at:
Our current project is the World Trade Center Memorial Garden to be installed at the Parmelee Ave. entrance to the Municipal Building. This special garden will be dedicated to those residents who lost their lives on 9/11/01. While the Boro has agreed to pay a portion of the cost of construction, the Garden Committee has been given responsibility to raise the additional funds needed for design, completion and landscaping.
Because the Garden Committee is not tax-exempt, donations are NOT tax deductible; however, donations of any kind will be responded to with a thank you card.
The FLBGC has received several awards from the Borough and well as the county for beautification and volunteerism. We are very proud of what we do, and have a great group of volunteers. They are Barbara Bolton, Marge Bueschen, Jim Croucher, Eleanor Coles, Wendy Dabney, Anna Etkin, Goldie Jaffee, Robin Keller, Adrienne Kupperberg, Dassi Lowenstein, Jane McCrum, Betty McGinnis, Evelyn McHugh, Howard Mark, Gwen Parnes, Eileen Rocco, Chad and Barbara Seligman, Bea Sparber, Jane Spindel, Martha Tischler, Barbara and Jim Vanderbeck, Lois Van Olden, Susan Winston, and Jane Young.
All members must attend a minimum of 3 meetings and outdoor clean-ups, etc., a year. We meet at the Municipal Building at least four times per year. The room location is to be announced. The following dates for 2005 are tentative and subject to change:

Not only do we plant, but prune, weed, and water as well. Experience is not necessary, and some join to learn about planting and maintenance. If you would like to become a member call the Borough Clerk's office, 201-794-5340.
If you would like to donate plants from an overgrown garden or a landscaping update, please call Martha, 201-796-8369. We cannot take large shrubs as conifers with deep root systems; azaleas and rhododendrons are usually good. Perennials are always welcome.
If you any gardening questions you would like us to answer in this space, please contact us.
